Sherrill Dunevant Griffis passed away peacefully on March 1, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born in Roxboro, NC on April 21, 1943, to Edgar Love Dunevant, and Lillian Averette Dunevant.
After graduating High School, Sherrill attended Wake Forest University. From there, she went to work for New York Life in New York City. Coming from a small farm in NC to the big city was exciting for Sherrill. She enjoyed the culture, art, and culinary experiences that NYC had to offer. Sherrill married Robert LeGrand Griffis in 1974 and left the city life to help raise a family with her husband.
Sherrill’s passion was interior design. She decorated many homes including several of her own. Her husband’s career took them to numerous places around the country. They had homes in the West End area of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; North Preston area of Dallas, Texas; among other places and ultimately retiring in Little Elm, Texas.
Surviving are her husband Robert LeGrand Griffis of Dallas; stepchildren Julee Griffis; Danila Skaugen (Bob), Kyle Griffis (Terrill); brother Edgar Love Dunevant, Jr, (Teresa) of Lexington, NC; nephew Maxwell Dunevant; daughter-in-law Jane Griffis; grandchildren Justin Hege, Anna Skaugen, William Skaugen, and Edward Griffis. Sherrill is predeceased by her parents Edgar and Lillian Dunevant, son Chuck Griffis and sister Bonnie Dunevant.
Sherrill also loved to entertain friends and host family parties, especially during the holidays. Her home adorned many photos of friends and family celebrations.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Sherrill’s honor can be made to New Century Hospice, 4101 McEwen Rd #500, Dallas, TX 75244.
