Marinus Johannes Cornelius (Rik) van den Handel passed away May 9th, 2025 at 66 years old after a courageous battle with cancer. Rik is survived by his wife, Janice, his son, Ryan and his canine companion, Reese.
Rik was an adventurer, enjoying sailing, water skiing, water polo, rugby and safari in South Africa. He was passionate about cycling, setting a monthly goal of riding 200 miles.
Rik had a passion for travel and his passport boasted countless locations across the globe. To name a few, Brazil, Spain, the Mediterranean, the mountains and canyons, New York, the Caribbean and many countries in Asia.
He was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys every Sunday as well as golf and tennis. He devotedly woke at early hours to watch F1 Racing and rugby.
He held many licenses, ones that got him up into the air as well as below ground, from a pilot’s license, driver’s license (for both sides of the road), a scuba license, and to top it off, a forklift license, a gift from a boss who thought he needed some grounding.
Rik enjoyed family vacations with Janice and Ryan, cruising, hiking, and Cub Scout excursions. Most of all, Rik loved being with his family at home, barbequing in his backyard and relaxing in his pool.
His passing was sudden to all of us. Rik was strong and fought every day, despite the toll his illness took on him. Even on his worst days, he found and gave relief in his humor.
Rik was always an unmissable presence in the room. He brought lightheartedness and positivity to everyone around him. Whether work or personal life, Rik made everyone around him laugh. His impact will not be forgotten, he will always be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, and dedicated professional, who saw the good in life and had the time of his life.
