Ian Gladwell Obituary
Ian Gladwell, 76 years of age, from Dallas Texas, passed away on Sunday 23 May 2021.
Ian was a wonderful and loving husband to Joan. A caring, generous and loving Stepfather to Theresa, Sean, Kath and Mary and Grandfather to, Steven, Selina, Suzanne, Warren, Ryan, Sarah, Holly, Andrew, Stephen and Callum. Beloved brother of Chris and Phil. Also much loved and appreciated Father-in-law to Joe, Heather, Geoff and Damian.
Ian was born in Bolton, England. He excelled at school and went on to study Maths at Oxford University, England. It was virtually unknown for children of working class families to be accepted in to Oxford at this time. He achieved his BA at Oxford then moved on to Manchester University, achieving his MSc and PHD and taught there for 20 years.
Ian left Manchester in 1987 to become a Professor at SMU in Dallas. He served as Chair of SMU department of Math 1988-1994 and again in 1998. He was also Director of Graduate Studies from 2005-2008.
Ian retired as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics.
Ian will be hugely missed by us all.
