Donald LeRoy Higgins joined the angels in Heaven on July 8th, 2019 after a battle with cancer. He was 88 years old.
Don was born on May 8th, 1931 in North Henderson, Illinois to Ivan George Higgins and Irene Bernice Becker.
Don was a member of the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from 1945 t0 1954.
He married Eileen Marcelle Maroney December 26, 1952, and had one son Donald Richard (Rick) Higgins who was born on January 16, 1954. They moved from Clarksville, Tennessee to Waco, Texas in 1954. Don started at KWTX Channel 10 Waco in 1954 as a floor cameraman, then as a director of local shows. He was promoted to Director of Photography, a position he held for 40 years. He loved to travel with the Baylor University football team as he filmed the games for the Baylor coach's TV shows.
Eileen preceded Don in death on August 21, 1983.
Don married Lana Moore Kirby on June 13, 1984. They enjoyed life in Longview, Texas. Lana preceded Don in death on May 20, 2013. After Lana's death, Don moved to Garland, Texas, where he lived in the Hometowne at Garland apartments with his two feline companions, Rocky and Junior. There, he made many friends who will miss him very much.
Don is survived by his son Rick Higgins and daughter-in-law Karen Higgins of Rowlett, Texas, Marla Bullard, her daughter Jamie Strawn, Marla's grandchildren Hannah Strawn and Hollye Strawn of Daingerfield, Texas, Scott Kirby and Robin Hughes of Longview, Texas, and Robin's sons Cameron Bishop and Caeden Bishop of Longview, Texas.
Don was a loving dad and was a wonderful husband to Eileen and Lana.
The family would like to thank the Dallas VA Hospice Charlie Unit for their wonderful and dedicated care of Don.
There will be a service held at Hometowne in Garland on Thursday August 1, 2019 at 1:00 PM.
