Maxine Gilmer Obituary

Maxine Lawley Gilmer was born August 14, 1934 and left us January 23, 2018.

She was born in Myrtle Springs, Texas during the height of the Great Depression, the second of five siblings. Her family struggled during this time, as so many others did. Since her father was always working to find new jobs, Maxine and her family lived in more than 20 different towns by the time she was 17. She met Odell Gilmer after graduating from Pleasant Grove High School in 1951 and they were married several months later.
During the next 15 years they bought a new brick house in the Casa View neighborhood of East Dallas for just over $14,000, where they brought up three children. All three of them - Larry, Linda and Terry - remember her kindness and love for them, no matter what sort of trouble they got into or how bad their report cards were.
In 1970, Maxine and the family moved to Van Zandt County when her husband took over family business that had been open since the 1940s. It was situated in Walton, Texas, a town with a population of 35 situated midway between Canton and Athens, Texas.
The business originally consisted of a grocery store and gas station, and a feed barn was eventually added. Maxine literally never had a day off for years but she never complained. Many of her customers remember her fondly even to this day.
After her husband's death in 1980, Maxine eventually sold the business and moved to Athens, Texas some 11 miles south of Walton. Some time later she settled in Longview to be nearer her grandchildren and remained there until 2017.
We will all remember Maxine for her quiet ways, her kind heart, love of animals and her fondness for pie. She often said "I never met a pie I didn't like". So the next time you enjoy her favorite - coconut meringue - please take a minute to remember Maxine and be grateful you knew her.
She is survived by three sisters and one brother - who all called her Maxiney - three children, nine nephews, one niece, two granddaughters and her cat Princess Leia.
