John Liddle Obituary

John A. Liddle passed away peacefully on October 1, 2016 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 88 after a brief illness. He was born on November 23, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Frank M. and Margaret Noble Liddle. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. John was a brilliant man with a keen sense of humor, who contributed much to Abilene, Texas over the last sixty years.

After a year at the University of Texas, John served in Korea and returned to graduate from Indiana University with highest honors. He became a Certified Public Accountant and practiced in Ft. Worth before starting his twenty four year career as an officer and director of the Citizens National Bank in Abilene. After taking early retirement from the bank in 1979, he went into investment counseling and personal investments.

In 1951 John married the beautiful (in every way) Leonardine (Lynn) Smith, from Texas, in Indianapolis, Indiana. They moved from Ft. Worth to Abilene in 1955 where they raised their four children. John was a devoted husband to Lynn who preceded him in death in 2013. He was a loving father who cared deeply for his children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed.

John was passionate about music, Masterpiece Theatre - especially Downton Abbey, the stock market and staying physically fit. A life long swimmer, John served as Treasurer of the Abilene YMCA during the building of the State Street YMCA. Until his recent illness, he could be spotted every morning swimming laps at his beloved Redbud YMCA. He raised the funding to construct the swimming pool at Abilene State School and founded the Abilene Swim Club and served as President during its construction and formative years.

Early in his life in Abilene, he shared his musical talents as a soloist and sang in the choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church. He loved music of all varieties from opera to Celtic Thunder and the Eagles. He always claimed to have a joke on any topic and was rarely proved wrong. Even in the last months of his life he maintained his wonderful wit and sense of humor, there was a twinkle in his eye and some might say he was still a bit of a flirt.

His survivors include his brother Gordon P. Liddle and wife Jutta, brother-in-law W. H. (Wib) Smith; son John Lee Liddle; daughters Peggy Liddle, Suzi Corley and Joan Maner and husband Randy. Grandchildren John R. Liddle and wife Katy, Diana Liddle, Catherine Woods and husband Travis, Kelley Liddle, Kimberley Schonfeld and husband Brett, Kristen and Christopher Corley, Megan and Mason Maner and six great granddaughters.

Services will be held Saturday, October 15th at 10:30am at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street, presided over by Dr. Robert Monk. A reception will follow the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Redbud YMCA 3125 South 32nd Street, Abilene, Texas 79605, St. Paul United Methodist Church 525 Beech Street, Abilene, Texas 79601 or to the donor's favorite charity.
