Donya Folco, 59, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2017 at her home in Plano, TX of breast cancer.
Donya spent her life fighting injustice - as a journalist, teacher and attorney. She was fiercely devoted to her two daughters, Hope Brown (husband James) and Sheldon Green. She was a loving wife to Deo Folco and a grateful sister to her brothers Monty Ross (wife Glenda) and Keith Cannon (wife Anke). She leaves behind many more nieces, nephews, friends and family.
Her Mother, Treva Cannon, precedes her in death
Donya was born Nov. 22, 1957, in Bonham, Texas, and graduated from Ardmore High School. Donya graduated from The University of Texas with a journalism degree and started her career at the Wichita Falls Times and Record News in Texas. There she concentrated on stories that improved public access to city and county services.
In 1981, she earned an education degree and taught journalism and English at Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth. She won several battles with administrators to preserve her students' freedom to publish articles on controversial issues.
In 1993, she graduated from SMU's Law School and began a more-than-20-year career fighting for her clients, whether that be civil, criminal or property law.
Donya was incredibly intelligent, she believed knowledge was one of the most important things a person has. She was strong, while she faced many challenges in her life she never backed down to any of them. She was kind, frequently volunteering at local homeless shelters and always willing to help anyone in need.
