Darrell Cockrell Obituary
Darrell Eugene Cockrell (a.k.a. Buddy) of Dallas, Texas lost his long battle with COPD and went to be with our Lord God on December 20th, 2017. Darrell was the youngest of seven children born to William Clinton Cockrell and Jessie Shaw Cockrell on September 8th, 1940 in Pampa, Texas. He attended Pampa High School and later Odessa High School where he met Brenda Ann Slough. The two were married in 1962 while attending Odessa College. The couple transferred to Texas Tech University where Darrell earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1964.
Darrell is survived by Brenda Slough Cockrell of Hickory Creek; son Michael Sean Cockrell, wife Kirstin Schoeller Cockrell and granddaughter Audrey Rose Cockrell of Dallas; son Clinton Wade Cockrell, wife Terri Marlow Cockrell and granddaughters Caitlin Michelle Cockrell and Caroline Elizabeth Cockrell of Frisco; daughter Tamara Dyann Cockrell Greenfield and husband Chad Wayne Greenfield of Plano. He is also survived by his two beloved Australian Shepherd dogs, Duke and Lucy.
Darrell was an avid wing shooter who loved to hunt with his sons and shoot skeet competitively, winning and placing in many leagues and tournaments throughout his life. After retiring from NCR he spent many years passing the skill of shotgun shooting on to generations of students through instruction at the Elm Fork Winchester Gun Club. Later in life, he continued his participation in shooting through keeping score for the skeet leagues at Dallas Gun Club. He was also an avid lover of the arts. Darrell enjoyed attending the opera, musicals and plays with his daughter.
It is also notable that Darrell was an excellent handyman who leaves behind many projects that will be appreciated long after his passing including the deck and barn at Pecan Peak Ranch and the security camera system at Northway Christian Church where he was a long time, very involved member.
We will be celebrating the life of Darrell Cockrell on Saturday, December 30th at 11:00 AM at Northway Christian Church, 7202 Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225 with a brief reception. The Naval burial ceremony will be at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211 on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 9:15am.
