Brett Winters Obituary

Brett Wade Winters of Plano, Texas, passed away on December 13, 2017, at the age of 35. Brett was born March 13, 1982, in Austin, Texas, to Will Ed and Cynthia Winters. He grew up, along with older brother Cade, younger sister Kayla, and younger brother Jared, in Austin, but also spent valuable time in Plainview, Balmorhea, and at Camp Blue Haven. As a kid, Brett was active, entertaining, and competitive.
Brett attended Austin Public Schools until the family relocated to Spicewood, Texas. Brett went to Lake Travis High School through his senior year. He was an accomplished student and he played basketball and football. Outside of high school, Brett worked in a few different restaurants and enjoyed spending time with friends. In 2000, Brett moved to Lubbock, joining Cade, to attend Texas Tech University, where he would earn a Bachelors in Business Administration and a Masters in Accounting in 2005. Outside of his coursework, Brett spent much time engaged in other activities, from working alongside his brothers in a B-B-Q restaurant, to fixing up the house he shared with a rotating mix of family and friends, to attending music concerts with, among others, the woman who would become his best friend and his wife.
Brett met Courtney Stewart, a fellow TTU freshman from Wichita Falls, through mutual friends. Common interests-sports, outdoor activities, music, dogs, date nights-led to a bond that would only grow stronger. They married on July 1, 2006, in Courtney's home town. Their first home together was in Dallas, where Brett got his first job upon graduating. The couple has remained in north Texas, moving from Dallas to Rowlett in 2007 and to Plano in 2011. On September 20, 2009, Brett's first son, Jameston Wade, was born. A second son, Blake Everett, followed on April 25, 2012, and the final member of the family, Elise Faye, was born March 4, 2014. Brett and Courtney have attended Prestoncrest Church of Christ since joining in the fall of 2006. Brett and Courtney have been active members in the church. In addition to involving their children, he served on five missions to Guatemala, served as Deacon since December 2016, and was a reader in the FriendSpeak ministry.
While establishing and raising his family, Brett worked at McGladrey LLP, an audit, tax, and consulting firm. After an internship in 2005, Brett was hired on fulltime and quickly advanced through the firm. He received a double-promotion to Manager in 2009 and then a promotion to Director in 2013; Brett was the youngest to achieve this level in the Dallas office's history. The summer after the birth of his daughter, Brett left McGladrey to become the CFO of CB Jeni Homes, a townhome builder in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. After chemotherapy treatment prevented him from working, Brett left his position but maintained an influential role in the company. Throughout his career, Brett has been admired by colleagues as much for his integrity and easy manner as for his astuteness and skillful efficiency. In every job, Brett has made friends with those he's worked with and maintained many of those relationships to this day.
Whether as a friend or colleague, a brother or son, a husband or father, Brett gladdened the hearts of those who knew him, serving as a source of strength, encouragement, wisdom, optimism, and laughter. He enjoyed success on both a personal and professional level, but would be the first to echo the words of the apostle Paul: "May it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." In December of 2016, Brett began a fight against cancer. In the year since his diagnosis, Brett saw what it meant to truly live. He immersed himself in the Word of God, drawing closer daily to his Lord and Savior and, certain of God's love and provision, shared that confidence with others. When his earthly body determined it was finished, Brett accepted the merciful calling of his Father to come home, trusting in and joyfully anticipating the reunion of his dearest loved ones at the feet of Jesus.
Brett was preceded in death by three of his grandparents, Richard Turnbough (PaPa), Willis Winters (Pappy), and Patty Winters (Memaw), and by an uncle, John Stephens. Brett is survived by loving wife Courtney (Stewart) Winters of Plano and their three children, Jameston, Blake, and Elise; parents Will Ed and Cynthia Winters of Spicewood, Texas; three siblings and their spouses, Cade and Jessica Winters of Weatherford, Texas, Matt and Kayla Vojik of Seattle, Washington, and Jared and Bryn Winters of Cache, Oklahoma; in-laws Donna Stewart, Kelly and Glenda Stewart, Scott Stewart, Thomas and Lynnlee Crow, and Maggie Stewart; grandmother Augusta Turnbough (Gigi) of Balmorhea, Texas; 7 nieces and nephews, Riley, Ruby, Layne, Aspen, Wyatt, Josie, and Claire; 15 aunts and uncles; and 19 cousins.
